Math - Mass and Capacity

Since Friday the students of Portable 10 have been reviewing mass and capacity.  We knew that mass is how much something weighs.

          REMEMBER: 1000 g = 1 kg

We also knew that capacity means how much something can hold.

REMEMBER:

                         1000 mL = 1 L
                         1 cup = 250 mL
                         2 cups = 500 mL
                         3 cups = 750 mL
                         4 mL = 1 L

Math - Learning our Hundredths

Today we learned about our hundredths.  We know that they are less than tenths, and are the second digit after a decimal.

 BONUS QUESTION
Place each number in the number column on the left.  After, turn the number into a mixed fraction and an improper fraction:
107.98
(you can use a calculator to help you)

Below you will find today's homework.  Remember to put your name and today's date on your work before handing it in.

Math Homework - Fractions to Decimals

Today we learned that fractions can be written using decimals.  We know that when we look at tenths, we can see decimals.

For example: We know that 1/10 = 0.1
We also know that 5/10 = 0.5 (one half)
And we know that one and one-tenth = 1.1

Math Review - Equivalent Fractions, Improper and Mixed Fractions

Hi Portable 10,
This weekend I want you practicing your equivalent fractions, and also your improper and mixed fractions.

Equivalent Fractions
Equivalent fractions are fractions that name the same amount.

Example:  1/2 = 5/10    or    2/3 = 8/12.

Remember, to find an equivalent fraction either find the simplest form, or multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Improper and Mixed Fractions
Improper fractions and mixed fractions are finding fractions that are more than 1 whole.
Improper fractions show fractions where the numerator is larger than the denominator.
Mixed fractions show whole numbers as part of a fraction.

Example:    Improper fraction - 7/2        or        Mixed fraction - 3  1/2

Math Homework - Fractions of a Set

On Tuesday we learned how to find the fraction of a set.  This is when we discover the fraction of a bigger number.

To do this:
  • We learned that we have to separate the bigger number into equal groups.  The denominator tells us how many equal groups we need to make.
  • Afterwards, we have to add the the groups together to find the answer.  The numerator tells us how many groups we need to count.
There will be further examples shown in today's homework page.  Please click on "Click here" for access to today's homework.

Math Homework: Fractions, Oh My!

This passed Friday, we got a pretty good start on our new math unit: Fractions.  A fraction can be used to show a part of a whole. For example, we could use a fraction to show how many pieces of the circle are shaded in below.

The total circle is split into 4 equal pieces.  The total number of pieces that make up the circle is called a whole.

When we are looking at the total number of equal parts, that is called the denominator.  The denominator is the number that goes at the bottom of a fraction.

3 out of the 4 equal pieces are shaded in.  This is called the numerator.  The numerator is the number that goes on top of the fraction and is the equal parts that are counted.
Below is the math homework.  Click on "Click here" to gain access to the homework.

Math Homework - Same area, different perimeter

Last week we learned that a shape with the same perimeter can have a different area.  Well, today we learned just the opposite.  Today we learned that different shapes can have the same area, but have different perimeters.  A few examples will be posted on the homework today, so take a look and good luck!
Below you will find today's homework and grid paper to complete your homework on.  If you do not have a printer, drawing the shapes on lined paper is fine.  Just make sure to include all measurements of each shape.

Area and Perimeter - Math Homework

Today we learned how area and perimeter are related.  We learned that when we are finding the area of a rectangle or square, all you need to know is the length and width of a shape to find the area.

We know that:
length x width = area

Below you will find today's homework and grid paper to complete your homework on.  If you do not have a printer, drawing the shapes on lined paper is fine.  Just make sure to include all measurements of each shape.

Social Studies - Physical Regions of Canada

Your Social Studies quiz is only a few days away, so I thought it would be a good opportunity for us to review the physical regions of Canada.  Remember, a physical region is land that is divided by how it looks (landforms, and vegetation), feels (climate), and what we take from it (natural resources).

Canada has 7 physical regions: the Appalachian, the Cordillera, Canadian Shield, Arctic Lowlands, St. Lawrence Lowlands, Hudson Bay Lowland, and the Interior Plain.

Look at the map of Canada below:

Can you identify and label each physical region of Canada?  Can you find the missing region on this map?

Social Studies Quiz on Thursday and Friday

Portable 10, 16, and 18 will be having a social studies quiz this coming Thursday May 17 and Friday May 18.  For the quiz you will need to know:
  • Where the provinces and territories go on a map of Canada
  •  Where the physical regions of Canada go on a map of Canada
  •  The difference between a political region and a physical region
  •  Compare the similarities and differences between 2 or more physical regions of Canada
To help you remember the provinces, there is a song that you can sing to yourself which orders them from east to west.

     Lyrics:

The provinces of Canada are fun to remember,
Fun to remember, fun to remember (x2)
     So sing them with me.

     Newfoundland and P.E.I,
     Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick
Quebec, Ontario, and from there you'll see
     Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, B.C.

(But don't forget about Nunavut, Northwest
     Territories, and the Yukon!)

Also, take a look at the map of Canada below and try to label all 10 provinces and 3 territories yourself.  Click here to practice.

Math Today: Greater Than, Less Than, Equal To...

Today in math we are still trying to polish up and master our conversion skills.  This time, instead of creating charts to show the differences between units of measurement, we used symbols.  These symbols are:
  • > (Greater than)
  • < (Less than)
  •  =  (Equal to)
For example:
80cm > 750 mm.  This would read: 80 centimetres is greater than 750 millimetres.
Another example would be 500 mm < 7dm.  This would read: 500 millimetres is less than 7 decimetres.
And Another example is 200 cm = 20 dm.  Which is 200 centimetres is equal to 20 decimetres.

Today's Math Homework: Conversion... again.

Today we reviewed converting different units of measurement.  Some of you are still getting mixed up when you are converting a unit of measure to another.  But, if you remember your basic conversions (ex. 10mm = 1cm), then you shouldn't have any problems figuring out the rest.

Learning Tip of the Day: Remember, when you are moving a decimal place, start from the right side, and move the decimal place as many times as there are zeros.

For example: 1 m = 100 cm
Because there are two zeros in 100, you must move the decimal place two times starting from the right when you are converting centimetres to metres.  That means 1cm = 0.01m.

Good luck!

Linear Measurement: Conversion

Today Portable 10 is learning how to convert, or change, one unit of measurement to another.
Converting units of measure can be tricky.  You must first ask yourself, "Will the number change into a bigger number, or smaller number?" In other words, you need to decide if you are going to add zeros or add decimals to convert a number correctly.  For example:
  • 1 mm = 0.1 cm
  • 1 cm = .01 m
  • 1 m = .001 km
OR
  • 1 cm = 10 mm
  • 1 m = 100 cm
  • 1 km = 1000 m
Remember, if you are changing a larger unit of measure to a smaller unit of measure, the number will be larger.
For example: 25cm = 250 mm because it takes 10mm to make 1cm.

Also remember that if you change a smaller unit of measure to a bigger one, the number will be smaller.
For example: 25cm = 0.25m because it takes 100cm to make 1m.

Good luck!

Hello Portable 16 (Ms. Hopkins' Class), and Portable 18 (Mr. Darawal/ Ms. Nicholls' class) and welcome to our blog!

For today's homework, I would like you to talk to your parents and ask them the following questions:

  1. What is government, and why is it so important?
  2. What are some things that they do for us as citizens of Canada?
Afterwards, I would like you to write 2 simple paragraphs about what you have learned from your parents.  Your first paragraph should explain what government is and why it is important.  Your second paragraph should tell me at least 3 things that the government does for us.

NOTE: Please try to do your homework on proper lined paper.  Do not cut, rip, or fold the paper in any way after you are finished writing.

*Remember to include your name and today's date on your homework before you hand it in tomorrow.

A Trip to Roy Thomson Hall

On Monday April 23rd, Portable 10 went to Roy Thomson Hall to enjoy the symphony and local choir.  Below are a few pictures from our trip:

(Above) Our view from St. Andrew Station. We were all pretty excited to be so close to the CN Tower.

As the choir first hit the stage, we were all pretty excited.  The performance started at 12:00pm and ended at 1:00pm.  By the end , there was a mixed reaction from our class.  Some students found it a little boring and too long, others really enjoyed it.  One students from our class said, "I was picturing stories in my head while listening to the music."  Despite the mixed reviews, I believe that it was a worthwhile field trip, and an amazing opportunity to experience something new in the city that we live in.

Math Test: A Few Hints and Tips

Hello Portable 10!  As you know, you guys have a math test this coming Monday.  Here are a few tips that may help you solve those pesky probability word problems:

  1. Draw pictures or charts to help you find all possible outcomes
  2. Make tally charts to help you figure out the probability of certain questions
  3. Please read the questions carefully, and if you don't understand it, ask Mr. Chong to explain it
  4. Use your time wisely and make sure you answer every question before time ends
It is probably a good idea to know how to do the following things before the test on Monday:

  • How to solve for the probability of an outcome in different situations
  • How to use the language "certain," "likely, "equally likely," "unlikely," and "impossible" correctly
  • The difference between good and bad odds
  • How to read, understand, and answer word problems correctly
  • How to "show your thinking"
You might be telling yourself that these are the same things that you needed to know for the math quiz.  If you did, then you are correct!  There will be no surprises on the math test on Monday, and if you have been doing your homework regularly and paying attention in class, you should be in good shape!

Good luck!

Math Test Monday April 30, 2012

Today Portable 10 went to see Officer Marcy to talk about cyber-bullying and internet safety.  It was a very informative discussion and we learned a lot.  But, because of this, we missed our math time in class, so Mr. Chong has decided to move the math test to this coming Monday April 30, 2012.  This will give students extra time to practice their probability skills tonight and over the weekend.

You're welcome students :)

Below is today's math homework.  Please click on "Click here" to gain access to the homework. By doing this, you will be free to print off the homework and complete it at your own time.  If you do not have a printer, you can answer the questions on lined paper.

Learning Tip of the Day: Asking For Help!

Sometimes when we don't understand something that is being taught in class we can feel a whole bunch of different ways.  Some students feel scared, upset, embarrassed, or confused.  Some students can even feel all of these things at the same time!  Sometimes students feel this way so often that they start making bad choices in class, like:
  • Joking around and talking during lessons and work time
  • Avoiding teachers and not asking for help
  • Stop listening during lessons in the classroom
Every student has felt lost and in need of help sometime in the school year, and when this happens to you, you just have to tell yourself that it is okay if you don't understand something. What isn't okay is deciding to make bad choices instead of good choices when this happens.

The best choices you can make when you don't understand something is:
  1. First, ask a friend to help you.
  2. If you still don't understand something, ask the teacher right away.
The sooner you let a teacher know you don't understand something, the sooner the teacher can help you with that problem.  But remember, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make good choices like this in school.  I know you can do it!

To Parents: Gaining Access to Homework

Some students in portable 10 have expressed some difficulty in gaining access to the homework that is being posted on our blog.  One possible reason why this difficulty exists is because you may need to download and use the new Google Chrome web browser.  It is a very quick and easy download and should take no time at all.  Because the homework is a Google document, other web browsers like Internet Explorer may have problems downloading the file properly.

If you are having difficulty gaining access to the homework, please click here to download Google Chrome and use this web browser to gain easier access to our classroom blog.

All the best,

Mr. Chong

A Note To Parents: Homework Routines

Homework is a part of a healthy routine at home and will be encouraged to be apart of your child's day-to-day.  Not only will it allow you to stay connected with what your child is learning in school, but will also give the student an opportunity to apply new concepts independently at home.

Homework will try to be provided everyday except weekends (that means, Monday - Thursday).  Unless specified otherwise, homework is expected to be completed and brought back to school the next day to be graded as either "completed" or "incomplete."

Doing homework will also give students further opportunities to ask questions and to think deeper about certain areas of study.  I hope we can work together to keep your child's mind active and curious.

All the best,

Mr. Chong

Probability Review Homework

For the past 2 weeks, we have been learning about probability in our classroom. Probability is calculating the odds, or the likelihood, of an outcome.  For the past week, the class has been working together in small groups finding the probability of different games that have been set up around the classroom.

We are coming to an end in our unit on probability, and a short quiz will be given this Wednesday April 25, 2012.

Welcome! A Letter to Students and Parents

Dear Parent/ Guardian and students,

"Welcome to Portable 10" is a new blog initiative that will keep students and parent's connected to what is happening in the classroom. Students are expected to visit this blog on a daily basis to check for daily homework assignments and also review new concepts and ideas that have been discussed in class.

The blog is also an excellent tool to use to check for new updates on what portable 10 has been working on throughout the week. Students are also encouraged to post their own thoughts, ideas, and concerns on certain topics and issues brought up in class or on this blog.

Blogging has become a new trend in education that allows students and parents better access to their education. It is becoming more and more common in classrooms and is a valuable skill to learn at an early age. I encourage your participation! Enjoy!

From,

Mr. Chong
